A Visual Timeline of Areté

Sagip is an exhibition that explores how makeshift interventions through innovative technology become life saving in disaster situations where resources are meager. The exhibition is presented by Arete, Ateneo Innovation Center, and Coastal Cities at Risk (CCAR).

Arete hosts a free Christmas Concert in Hyundai Hall for the Ateneo community as well as the general public. Performers include Joanna Ampil, Noel Cabangon, The Company, and Ateneo Chamber Singers.

Mula Sa Buwan, a Filipino adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac and based on Soc Rodrigo’s Filipino Translation, is a musical set in 1940s Philippines. The production, directed by Pat Valera, is staged in Hyundai Hall.

Tanghalang Ateneo’s adaptation of Marisol by Jose Rivera, a Puerto Rican playwright, is staged in the Doreen Black Box.

Piano Duets and Sarswela Songs, a concert arranged by The School of Humanities opens in the Doreen Black Box. This honors Doreen Gamboa Fernandez, for whom the theater is named, and her sister Della Gamboa Besa.

Cine Areté, a series of Cinemalaya film screenings, opens in the Doreen Black Box.

A musical adaptation of Lualhati Bautista’s Dekada ’70 is staged in the Doreen Black Box. The production is directed by Pat Valera.

What We Talk About When We Talk About the "War on Drugs" is a multimeda exhibition that showcases data gathered by the Ateneo Policy Center. Presented in partnership with the Ateneo School of Government and Areté.

A stage play adaptation of Desaparesidos by Lualhati Bautista, a contemporary classic from Philippine Literature, opens in the Doreen Blackbox. This is adapted and directed by Guelan Luarca.

Areté co-hosts the Asian Shakespeare Conference. Spearheaded by Dr. Ricardo Abad and Dr. Judy Ick of UP Diliman, the event gathers more than 170 performers, Shakespeare enthusiasts, members of the International Shakespeare Association and Asian Shakespeare Association from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America.

Lysistrata, a theater arts thesis production directed by Areté Artistic Director Ricky Abad and staged by Tanghalang Ateneo, opens in the Doreen Black Box. This is the first performance in the space.

The Fine Arts Festival, a showcase of thesis projects from graduating students of the Department of Fine Arts is held in Arete for the first time.

The milestone 70s/Objects, Photographs and Documents launches the Special Exhibition spaces on the 3rd floor of the Ateneo Art Gallery in the Ambeth R. Ocampo Gallery, the Elizabeth Gokongwei Gallery and the Alicia P. Lorenzo Gallery. The move to Areté allows the Ateneo Art Gallery to display 30% of its permanent collection while maintaining an active special exhibition program. This results in a quadrupling of visitor numbers and more artwork donations and bequests.

Elmer Borlongan Draws the Line is the inaugural exhibition in the Wilson L. Sy Prints and Drawings Gallery.

The inaugural exhibition of the permanent collection, Love it and Leave it in the Mr. and Mrs. Ching Tan Gallery, Mr. and Mrs. Chung Te Gallery and Ernesto and Susan Tanmantiong Gallery shows how the collection developed from its creation in 1959 until the present.

Artkitektura, a Festival of Architecture and the Arts celebrating holistic approaches to architecture and the built environment is held in Arete.

From Risk to Resilience, an exhibition by the Coastal Cities at Risk project done in partnership with the Sandbox programs launches in the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Sandbox Zone

Eto Brute, a devised performance of Julius Caesar premieres in the Suthira B. Zalamea Lobby of the Soledad V. Pangilinan Arts Wing. The production explores staging performances in alternative spaces outside the confines of the theater.

Areté, Ateneo Art Gallery, Asia Society and Ayala Museum presents the Asia Society Art and Museum Summit : Cultivating and Arts Community in the 21st century. This is the first of many international conferences that will be held in the complex.

The Ateneo Art Gallery opens its ground floor galleries, Mr. and Mrs. Ching Tan Gallery, Mr. and Mrs. Chung Te Gallery and Ernesto and Susan Tanmantiong Gallery in October along with the Ateneo Art Awards 2017 exhibition.

In September 2017, the George SK Ty Learning Innovation Wing is blessed and Games and Politics, an exhibition produced by Goethe Institut and ZKM (Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe) is installed in the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Sandbox Zone.
